Genealogy Forms
There are a many forms used by geanalogist as they collect their research data. some of the most common charts are list below. All of there can be found Online to be printed out, or filled in, and the printed. Many Genealogy books have copies of these forms, and some may also be found at stationary stores.
- Pedigree Chart
- This web (Family Tree Chart) listsa pedigree with Parents, Grand Parents back several generations. These come in several forms. The most common is the four or five generation chart, but you can purchase paper charts which will accommodate as many as 15 generations
- Fan Charts
- The Fan Chart is a specilized version of the Pedigree Chart. It allows more generation to be displayed on a signal chart, but may lack detail information.
- Family Group Sheet
- A family group sheet is the basic worksheet used for genealogical research. While a pedigree chart identifies your ancestry and serves primarily as a culmination of your work, the family group sheet is how you get there.
- Fancy Family Pedigree charts
- These forms contain the same information as the pedigree chart or the fan chart, but tey are often in a fnacy form suitable for framing or gifting to a family member.
There are many different formats available, but each Family Group Sheet is based on a single family unit - husband, wife and children. A family group sheet has space for the basic genealogical events for each family member, including dates and places of birth, marriage, death and burial. For each child on the list, a name of a spouse can be given, along with a date and place of the marriage. There is usually a place for notes where you should record where you got your information (source) as well as make note of any discrepancies in your findings.
- Ascendant Chart
- This is another type of pedigree chart in the form of a table or list. The pedigree chart is the more graphic representation of a person's ancestors, while the ahnentafel presents the information in a neat, compact manner. Ahnentafels are not used quite as often today as they were in the past, mstly because the computer provides storage and graphic viewing of genealogy information. These were very popular aidn helpful before the use of the computer.
On a ascendant cchart
ancestors are numbered using a system known as the ahnentafel numbering system. You (or the person whose ancestry is being traced) are number 1. A father is twice his child’s number (1 x 2 = 2) and a mother is twice the child’s number plus one (1 x 2 = 2 + 1 = 3). The numbers for men are always even and the numbers for women are always odd, with the exception of number 1 which can obviously be either. One thing which I think is neat is that the first number for each generation is equal to the number of people in that generation.
- Census Forms
- US Census were taken every ten years from 1790 up to 2010. The records from 1790 through 1940 are presently available for genealogy research. Each census used a different form. Copies of these forms are availabe Online.
- Cemetery Forms
- These sheets are useful for people who wish to keep track of information in graveyards or sexton’s records.
- Research Log
- This chart helps organize any research and helps prevent duplication of effort. They contain dates, names of person researched, list and description of sources and rovisions for comments.
- Relationship Charts
- This is not a form to be filled out, but is a very useful chart that shows how cousins within a family are related.
